“Before pursuing curation, I studied photography at Michaelis School of Fine Arts. What I loved most about my degree was that it afforded me the freedom to express myself despite the impending stress of the commercial art world. Photography became a medium through which I could invite audiences into my worldview, but also through which I could view other worlds, and experiment and test the waters as I developed. It is a medium which can be so many things at once: intimate, constructed, subversive and overt.

As my undergraduate degree came to a close, I was faced with the vast uncertainty of the real world. As a student it can be terrifying to look at the art world. It appears that, to be successful, you need to already have established connections and relationships with successful figures in the sphere. It can also seem as if the things you are most passionate about may not lead to your success. My interest in this exhibition is its ability to encourage young photographers to have confidence in themselves.

The exhibition invests in the future of the medium by giving opportunities and recognition to the youth who will shape it in the years to come. I appreciate how the initiative will be able to create spaces which foster interaction between student groups and institutions, and how it will give students a glimpse into how group exhibitions come together”.
